Academic Support Center

Most LSC students are probably aware of the Burnham Academic Support Center, that small room connected to the library. Many have probably also been in it, even if only to sample the free food. But how many students really know what goes on in this room, which many call Bob’s Place or simply “the Writing Center”? As it turns out, a lot more than writing happens in Academic Support.

Academic Support is home to two programs: Project Excel and Student Academic Development. Project Excel is a federally-funded program that works with students who come from low to moderate income families, who have learning disabilities, or whose parents have not graduated from a four-year college. The program offers testing accommodations for students with learning disabilities, help with note-taking, tutoring, laptop lending, help with tax preparation, counseling for both personal and academic issues, financial aid assistance, and a scholarship program. Project Excel at LSC is run by Bob McCabe, Director of Student Support Services, and also employs Angela Ryan, Special Services Counselor; Mary Etter, Learning Specialist; and Lori Drew, Tutor Coordinator.

Students who do not meet the eligibility requirements for Project Excel but would still like some academic help need not despair, as they need only contact Student Academic Development. This program, run by Debra Bailin, is open to all LSC students and has many of the same features as Project Excel, most importantly tutoring and help with academic issues, such as test anxiety and time management.

Tutoring is one of Academic Supports primary services. Tutoring is conducted on a course-by-course basis, and both students and faculty can request that a tutorial be set up for a specific class. Project Excel students seeking tutoring will be assigned a personal tutor. Other students will be directed to the tutor for their class, whom they can see on a drop-in basis (no appointment needed) whenever that tutor is on duty in Academic Support. Academic Support also runs the Writing Center and the Math Resource Room. The Writing Center, located in Academic Support, offers writing tutoring regardless of subject, while the Math Resource Room, located in Vail 450, offers math tutoring and stocks educational math materials. Math tutoring has also recently become available in the Writing Center. All tutors are fellow LSC students, and students interested in becoming tutors should contact Debra Bailin.

Students who wish to participate in Project Excel can call Academic Support or stop by. Instructors can also refer students to Academic Support.

Website video reviews

Good video site: The Washington Times seems to have some good video. "The Times Tube" is an interesting concept and I really thought that this was a wonderful idea. Humorous in some respects and a great idea overall. I think this site could use some more video, but overall it is very well done. Located on the first page of the site, which was a great thing for the user. They seem to be taking the idea of "youtube," which is extremely popular, and putting it into their website. We all know that newspapers are having a hard time right now, and having a wonderful, easy to navigate video menu will help this paper survive.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/

Bad video site: The video on this site is not as well done, although I have to give them credit on even having any. This is such a small newspaper, but it did try to give some stories in video form. The video is less clear and there is less of it overall. This is to be expected with a website which has less money. There are videos for all different interests, such as sports and politics. The video just did not have the quality that "The Washington Times" has. Also, there is less vieo on this site. At least they tried.

ireport critique

I think that ireport is a wonderful resource for the masses. I really think that this is the way of the future. ireport seems to get people involved in the news process. Everything is part of the news and I think that people are getting more involved in the internet. Television news seems to be in decline and this may actually help keep CNN on the cutting edge. I also thought that the stories were smaller and more important to everyday life. You can find stories that impact you and your hobbies. I feel as if people were losing a sense of the importance of the news and now, with this tool, we can begin to see its necessity once again. There is a tendency to need instant gratification in our lives, and this CNN idea gives the user the ability to get his or her "fix." I found these videos to not be boring, they were actually more interesting than a lot of the videos on CNN.

CNN.com review

I really enjoyed CNN.com because of the amount of video content available on the website. It seems as if less people enjoy reading about the news, and prefer watching it play out in front of them. I also really liked a great deal of the stories because I found them to be well written and non biased. I really don't think that bias has a role in the media and is playing to large of a part as of right now. I really enjoyed the site and will definitely go and visit again, because I love the news.

Slideshows and Photo Gallery

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/05/15/slideshow.hubble.galaxies/index.html (slideshow with audio)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8tnBsheF8M (slideshow without audio)

http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/home#section=COLLECTION&subSection=PremiereCollection&subSubSection=5866282&language=EN (Photo Gallery)

I believe that the slideshow without audio seemed to give the complete story better in this circumstance, but that is just because of the fact that the silent slideshow is about Anne Frank. I would normally think that audio is always a help when it comes to creating a story. The slideshow is a better tool for making a story because you can put the photos in an order that delivers an impact to the audience. I don't really believe that photo galleries are the best option because they seem somewhat random and not in the correct order. Sound makes an incredible differences because I feel that it brings out peoples emotions even more and can only add the the experience. Overall, the best storytelling device would be an audio slideshow.

Why We Are Here

Nearly two weeks ago, our team sought to answer a question: why are we here? While we knew we weren’t about to solve the mystery of existence, we hoped to learn why we, the student body of LSC, had chosen this school for our higher education. We interviewed several random students and asked them why they came to LSC. We then compiled these interviews into a podcast, which you can listen to by clicking on the title of this post. As you will hear, the students gave us some interesting answers.

Not surprisingly, several students cited LSC’s television studies program as their reason for attendance. All the television studies majors we interviewed mentioned the program’s quality; one mentioned how hard it is to find this major at other schools. One of our interviewees hopes to become an anchor for ESPN and was attracted to LSC’s television studies program because it has sent 24 grads on to ESPN. Such answers have confirmed our suspicion that LSC’s television studies program is widely known and a big draw, and it appears we have many future news anchors and sports casters in our midst.

Other answers were more humbling. One student reports coming because of the relatively low cost; another picked LSC because he claims not to have gotten good grades in high school and was unable to get into other schools. Clearly, LSC is a place where even those who might not otherwise go to college can feel welcome.

Yet not all came to LSC out of desperation. One student reported having the option to go to much more prestigious schools, but he chose LSC because he liked its small classes and friendly atmosphere. Apparently, LSC has some special qualities that belie its small size and lack of grandeur.

So why are we here? We are here because we want to be on TV, because we have nowhere else to go, or because we simply like the place. But no matter why we came, we all seem happy we did: all of our subjects gave enthusiastic answers. But don’t take our word for it. Listen to the podcasts, and hear the real words of your colleagues as they reveal why they are part of the LSC community. We hope you will like our set-up, but most of all, we hope you will connect with what you hear, and perhaps see some of yourself in our subjects responses. Above all, we hope you will agree that we belong in this school together.

Audio Project Idea

My group and I are going to do our project on why people chose to go to LSC. We are going to interview fellow students and find out what drew them here or if they even like it. We will then add some of our own commentary into the audio.

My Three Podcasts

The three Podcasts that I listened to are...

1. AC360 Daily Podcast.
This was a great podcast. It was a video podcast from the CNN news program, AC360. The podcast was about Haiti and family doctors. I thought that the information was well researched and the information was given to the audience in a fun way. I love the news so this was an easy pick for me. I might continue to listen to this podcast, but probably won't in the future. I did not put this on my ipod, I just watched it on my laptop.

2. NPR: It's all Politics.
This is a podcast which involved two people talking about current events in politics, such as Obama's health care plan and John McCain's reelection campaign in Arizona. I didn't really enjoy this podcast because I found it to be somewhat boring, considering the material. I enjoy politics a lot, but it seems that these people could have spiced up the podcast a bit. I will not listen to this again and it was not put on my ipod.

3. CNET Gadgettes
This podcast involved a few people who talked about different technologies and consumer electronics. They talked about some interesting things such as a "sun dress" that is electronic. The people joked around a great deal which made this podcast a lot of fun to listen to. I think that I am going to continue to listen to this because of the entertainment value, and the fact that I learn about current electronics. I did not put this on my ipod.

Vtdigger.org Review

Vtdigger.org is a fantastic site that seems to be really well developed and also very politically neutral in its views. From reading some of the stories on the site I noticed that a lot of quotes are continuously used, which is a very nice touch because it gives the real facts and there can't be any bias. The one story that I looked at in particular was titled "Vermont GOP: Taxes, regulations hurt Vermont businesses, economy. " This entire article could have been made with liberal views prevailing throughout, but it seemed to give the straight facts. This is something that seems to be rare in the media today. Wherever you turn you seem to get opinions thrown at you. This can make true journalism hard to come by, but this website seems to be changing that. This site is really quite intriguing and I think that it would be nice to do a multimedia project on it.
The way that Ms. Galloway is going about funding this site is interesting and could actually work quite well. I don't know if this will generate enough money as paid advertising would, but it makes the website have a home town feeling and makes the page much less cramped. I also think that when the website gets a strong following the money will come in at a much faster rate, allowing the site to survive and prosper. I really like the way this is being done.
Overall I thought the site was fantastic. The look and the entire feel was very "Vermont," and it seemed to keep that small town quality to it, which I liked strongly. In the future I will definitely check this website out for my Vermont news needs because it seems to give fair and honest reporting, which is a rarity nowadays.

Television Vandalism Stirs Debate.

Blurb: New television screen in ATT vandalized during Christmas break.

Body: On the evening of Monday, Jan. 18, an unknown vandal ruined the new televison screen located in the ATT. The screen was worth approximately $3000 and, according to director of public safety George Hacking, a replacement is going to be ordered next week.

In order to protect the new screen there may have to be security cameras placed in ATT. This may cause debate amongst students and faculty and there are many legal issues that have to be met before this can occur. The need for security cameras comes as a result of the lack of security officers on campus since officer Charlie Forrest has been deployed to Afghanistan.

There is no information regarding who may have caused the destruction. There have been no leads, but if you have any information on who may have vandalized the television you are asked to contact public safety.

Review of nsnsports.net

This blog is really interesting and there are a lot of things that I think it does very well. The first thing that I noticed was the amount of information located on the blog. It seems somewhat overwhelming and that is my biggest complaint with the blog. If I were to change one thing about the page I would completely take away the "recent video" section from the homepage. There is already a "video" tab, so I feel that having this section on the homepage just clutters.

I did really enjoy the bright red lettering. I thought that this is extremely eye catching and makes the text stand out. I also thought that the tabs were well implemented and that the local advertisement is nice. All in all this blog seems really sophisticated and well done.
